In Sweden, there is a new technological trend that is something out of a futuristic comic book. About 3,500 Swedes have volunteered themselves for science and inserted microchips under their skins. This chip is called an electronic RFID chip.
When this chip is implanted under the skin it allows the carrier the ability to open doors without using keys, pay for services using their hands instead of a credit card and even travel without a ticket.
Point of insertion
The same way chips are inserted into animals to monitor them in the wild, is the same way the RFID chip is inserted into humans. The chips are inserted into the back of the hand between the thumb and index fingers. With the chips placed between underneath your skin, you no longer have to worry about carrying a key ever again.
Cause of this trend
A lot of individuals have suggested that the reason for this recent trend is due to the strong economic welfare of the state. But in truth, experts suggest that the main factor causing more than 3500 Swedes to implant microchips under their skin is a lot more complex than you would expect. In Sweden, there is a huge bio-hacking culture.
What is bio-hacking?
Bio-hacking is terminology that refers to experiments in biomedicine which includes hacking the human body with biological material. It is based mainly on the theory of transhumanism – which is the belief that the human race can grow and evolve beyond its physical limitations through the implementation of science and technology. These experiments are done most times outside normal traditional institutions like universities or medical companies. The same way they are people who hack computers, biohackers hack anything biological and use it.
This trend is not popular only in Sweden, last year a software company in the United States caused ripples in the tech world after they implanted microchips into their workers similar to the ones in Sweden.
The CEO of the company, Three Square Market wrote on the company blog, “Eventually, this technology will become standardized allowing you to use this as your passport, public transit, all purchasing opportunities, etc.”
A lot of Christians are becoming increasingly worried about this new technological trend because they see the idea of implanting a microchip into the skin as a sign of “the mark of the beast”, which the bible in Revelation chapter 13 to represent “a mark on their right hand or their forehead”. A recent poll in Sweden although it shows that the Swedes won’t care about the supposed repercussion of this new trend as about only 1 out of 10 Swedes believe that religion is important to their everyday life.
In the past two decades, the Swedish government has been building its technological infrastructures – the Swedish economy is now ripe with digital services and digital tech innovations. There is a strong belief in all things digital, and it is very predominant in Swedish culture. It also represents the foundation of the transhumanist movement that becomes strong in this country.
