How sensors Improve Pump Performance?

It is undeniable that the application of IoT in the pump industry had a big impact. Pumps became ‘’smart’’ devices, and nowadays they are connected by using the Internet of Things technology that became very popular in recent years. IoT manages to connect several pumps at the same time, and the platform that connects them can be used for monitoring. Monitoring can be done by manufacturers, stakeholders, teams, or whoever is interested in tracking the devices’ work.

The point is, IoT allows interested parties to track important parameters that can be used for different analyses. For example, pump temperature can be monitored, or the number of vibrations produced per minute. It can be an indicator if something is wrong and if the system will suffer some kind of failure. Or, you can take a concrete example- let’s say that there is an increased level of vapor. Now, if there weren’t for IoT, it wouldn’t be possible to notice this. To translate- increased vapor means that the machine could be overheating. Detecting the parameter’s level can save the machine from eventual damage. IoT enabled the development of predictive maintenance and most importantly, real-time pump monitoring.

There are three important parts that IoT integrated when it comes to the pump solutions: the first one is connected to sensors along with the junction boxes and cables. The second one refers to data collection devices, and the third one is related to the analysis and monitoring that we mentioned above.

The integral component that we discuss in this article is, in fact, a sensor and its importance. Choosing the right sensor is a part of customizing the product for certain needs on the market. For example, if the environment of the pump is extreme like in mining, you will need a centrifugal pump. Since the conditions are harsh, the most suitable sensor to choose in this case would be a temperature sensor. On the other hand, pumps that are used in the gas industry would have a greater benefit from gas sensors since because that is their primary function.

Generally speaking, the main advantage of knowing which sensor to chose is that you can improve the whole monitoring. The process can be done without using physical inspections, thus remotely. This kind of work saves a great amount of time which means that economic benefits are as present as the efficiency ones.  Another significant advantage is that the safety of personnel is also increased since you can determine if there are any issues before they even happen.

In the following text, we give you the list of sensors that can be attached to pumps that operate in different environments.

Types of sensors that can be used:

Temperature Sensors

Pressure Sensors

Water Quality Sensors

Chemical Sensors

Gas Sensors

Smoke Sensors

IR Sensors

Level Sensors

Magnetic Sensors

Sensors serve to collect data. They share the collected data with the whole network and all devices connected to it.  It helps maintain the pumps and make them work more efficiently. A combination of different sensors and a good network with stable communication improve the functionality of the pumps along with their results.
